The Four Sons

One of my highlights of the Passover Seder is the anecdotal “Four Sons”.

It tells the story of four fictional children that hear about Passover and when they arrive at the Seder table, they’re baffled by what they see: flat bread, horseradish, cups and cups of wine.

Each child wants to know what’s going on but finds a different way to ask the question. The first genuinely wants to know the story of our Exodus. The second thinks this is just weird. Another son is too confused to formulate a coherent question while the fourth sits and stares.

I love this story for how it tells the tale of our Jewish nation. Wildly different opinions. Yet all sitting at one table.

The Passover story ends there, yet today’s story does not.

You see, there’s a fifth son. He doesn’t ask any questions because he isn’t even at the table. He’s never heard of Passover.

And this is where CTeen, me and you enter the picture. Together we can reach out to all those fifth children, and let them know that whatever feelings or questions they have, they’re always welcome at the table with the rest of us.

Happy Passover!
